JOHN NYBERG

United States Coast Guard, Engineman Third Class, 1957-1961

John Nyberg enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in November 1957. After Boot Camp, he was stationed in District #14 (now known as the Oceania District) in Honolulu, Hawaii as a Boilerman Third Class.

During the Korean Conflict, John was stationed in Hawaii, he was aboard USCGC Bering Strait, where the mission was training for air & sea rescue. His ship was one of three that would continually rotate every 21 days to cover a 10 mile square, ready for any emergency that could arise, but mostly for pilots ditching their plane in the ocean. John recalls how tough that 10 mile square was on them at times, when stormy weather and rough seas came to play. When they were relieved after a 21 day shift, the ship would go to Yokosuka, Japan for 10 days.

After 2 years on board the USCGC Bering Strait, John had completed his time overseas and returned to CONUS (the Continental United States). He reported to Headquarters in Cleveland, where his Rate was changed to Engineman Third Class, and was given orders to go to Sturgeon Bay Canal Lifeboat Station in Wisconsin. The canal connected Lake Michigan and the Green Bay waters, which was used by ships and ferries. At this time, John was doing inspections to ensure that sea-worthy vessels, as well as water vessels in dock, were in compliance with regulations. John was Honorably Discharged on November 27, 1961, but not before receving the National Defense Service Medal for his service and sacrifice for our country.

After his discharge, John relocated to Missoula, Montana, where he lived until April 2024 and enjoyed golf with his younger brother, Jim, and older brother, Marvin. Now in Spokane, he is able to spend lots of time with his loving daughter, Debbie. Debbie says,

"I love my father and I’m very proud of him. He is an incredible father who has always been there for me. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for him and now it’s my time to be there for him."
